The history of Churros

However, what we now call Spanish or Latin American “Churros” first appeared in Portugal. However, the real origin is not Portuguese either, but Chinese. The Portuguese, from their travels to Asia, brought the art of baking to what is known in China as “Youtiao”. But since the Portuguese could not work the dough in the same way as the Chinese, they used a star-shaped punch to press out the dough and fry it. The Portuguese fartura was born. In Portugal, churros are called ‘Farturas’.

We at Pink Truck make farturas like no one else in Sweden, if there is anyone else who makes farturas. People often ask what the difference is between churros and farturas. Here is the answer, the dough is the same i.e. very simple, basically only wheat flour, water and salt. The dough is then pressed into star-shaped lengths which are deep-fried and cut into smaller pieces. However, churros are narrower and thinner than farturas. As a result, farturas are juicier and more ‘doughnut-like’ in texture. Otherwise, it’s pretty much the same, the pre-fried farturas are rolled in sugar and cinnamon or filled with nutella.

Our farturas are very popular, especially with children, and the smell of freshly baked farturas makes for long queues at our pink cart.
